This video developed by the NHS Lanarkshire (Scotland) is a good animation that clearly explains the parts of the brain and how they operate during a traumatic experience.  It also highlights the effects of repeated and long term trauma.

It’s important to remember that ‘trauma’ is defined as an experience that feels overwhelming and beyond the persons’ control, so what may not be traumatic for adult, can be traumatic for a young child.

I hope you find this useful.
